The End of The Universe

Updated: May 16, 2021

Kaboom!!! What's That? Oh No! It is The End of The Universe!!!!! There are three possible ways the universe will end, a battle to decide the ultimate fate of the universe. A battle between gravity and expansion. (Gravity is the force that pulls and can sometimes push and the force that keeps our feet on the ground.) (Expansion means getting bigger, in this case, the universe gets bigger.) The force that powers expansion is dark energy. Although it is theoretical, it’s how most scientists explain how expansion works. First, there is The Big Crunch. Gravity wins if this happens. The Big Bang created the universe and the universe became bigger and bigger. This time it is reversed. The universe reaches some point of expansion and gravity becomes the main force. So the universe becomes smaller and smaller, denser and denser, and hotter and hotter. Eventually, it will be so small, it will be nothing. Even smaller than an atom or even smaller than a quark. Then, probably, The Big Bang would happen again. So, our Big Bang could be someone else's, Big Crunch. But, expansion is doing much better than gravity right now and every time scientists look at the universe, there is more dark energy. This is the least likely way the universe will end.

Next, there is The Big Rip. Expansion wins if this happens. The universe expands so fast, that they get ripped apart. Even the fabric of space-time itself. Stars, galaxies, atoms, particles, protons, electrons, neutrons, us, and even more. Nothing will merge ever again, since it will be too far away and the universe will expand forever. But, the universe is expanding steadily, so it is not the fate of the universe that is most likely to happen. Last, The Big Freeze. Expansion and gravity draw. The universe expands forever and all matter reaches a final uniform state. In this scenario, the universe will be filled with infinite phantom energy. The universe goes to a state of no thermodynamic free energy, so the universe will be unable to sustain processes that increase entropy. This means it will be very cold.

Anagh, theories about how the Universe can end is really fascinating. I learnt something. Thank you. Keep exploring. Good luck.
